Chapter 7 - The Inferno

The overwhelming, toxic smell of raw gasoline immediately flooded the second-floor hallway and choked the air.

Vanessa began aggressively splashing the highly flammable liquid across the expensive, imported wooden floorboards.

She casually explained that with all of us tragically dead in an accidental house fire, she would effortlessly sue the massive estate as the last remaining relative.

Carol raised her trembling handgun, but Vanessa just laughed directly in her terrified face.

Vanessa coldly reminded Carol that she didn't have the courage to pull the trigger to save herself thirty years ago, and she definitely didn't have it now.

Mark finally found a shred of his lost courage and lunged forward desperately to tackle his wicked, manipulative mistress.

Vanessa effortlessly dodged his clumsy, frantic attack and quickly flicked her silver lighter open.

She tossed the burning flame directly onto the heavily soaked hallway carpet.

A massive, terrifying wall of bright orange fire instantly erupted, completely separating us from the only staircase.

Vanessa sprinted away down the burning hallway, laughing maniacally as she safely disappeared into the thick black smoke.

The intense heat was absolutely suffocating, and the dark smoke made it nearly impossible to breathe or see.

Rachel grabbed a heavy wool blanket from the bed and quickly soaked it with cold water from the master bathroom sink.

She threw the heavy wet blanket protectively over me and my crying, terrified baby.

Mark desperately tried to kick through the burning drywall to create an emergency escape route into the adjoining room.

The wooden ceiling above us began to groan terribly and crack dangerously under the intense, rising heat.

Carol looked at me with deep, profound sorrow, finally realizing the immense, deadly damage her lifelong lies had caused.

She shoved Mark forcefully into the burning gap in the wall to save his miserable life.

Before Carol could follow him through the escape route, a massive, burning wooden ceiling beam collapsed directly on top of her.
