Chapter 7 - The Cave-In

The deafening explosion shook the ancient stone foundation of the mine violently.

Massive chunks of rock and dust rained down from the ceiling as Elena intentionally collapsed the main entrance to the cavern.

Richard and his armed mercenaries were now entirely sealed out of the mountain, completely unable to reach us.

Vera screamed in terror as a heavy boulder smashed into the ground just inches away from her broken body.

“We need to move deeper into the tunnels before the structural integrity fails completely,” Elias yelled over the chaotic noise.

Elena grabbed Emma’s hand, and Daniel grabbed the other, running blindly into the dark labyrinth of the abandoned mine.

They left Vera behind in the dust, her desperate pleas for help entirely ignored by the family she had tried to destroy.

Elias led them through the twisting, narrow passageways, relying on a faded map he had memorized years ago.

The air grew significantly colder and thinner as they climbed a steep, rocky incline deeper into the mountain.

“There is an old ventilation shaft at the top of this ridge that leads directly to the mountain summit,” Elias explained, panting heavily.

After an hour of grueling climbing, they finally reached a rusty iron ladder bolted to the stone wall.

Elias climbed up first, pushing against a heavy steel grate covering the top of the shaft.

With a loud screech of rusted metal, the grate gave way, and brutal winter moonlight flooded into the tunnel.

They climbed out onto the freezing, wind-swept summit of the mountain, entirely exposed to the elements.

Elena quickly pulled a bright red distress flare from her backpack and fired it high into the dark sky.

“The federal tactical teams saw the explosion. They will track this flare to our exact location,” Elena promised.

Daniel looked down the treacherous, snowy slope of the mountain, finally feeling a massive wave of hope wash over him.

Suddenly, a loud, mechanical whine cut through the howling wind.

A sleek, black helicopter rose slowly over the ridge of the mountain, its powerful spotlight blinding them instantly.

Richard was sitting in the open side door of the chopper, holding a high-powered sniper rifle aimed directly at Elena's chest.
