Chapter 11 - The Quiet Monster

Daniel stared at the small leather journal, his lungs completely forgetting how to draw oxygen.

The beautiful, warm illusion of his perfect new life shattered into a million jagged pieces on the hardwood floor.

His mother was not a tragic victim who had miraculously survived a brutal murder attempt.

She was the cold, calculating architect of the entire nightmare.

Daniel carefully closed the leather cover, his hands shaking so violently he could barely return the paperclip to its place.

He slid the journal back into the bottom drawer, making sure it looked exactly as he had found it.

“Daniel! Lunch is ready, sweetheart!” Elena’s bright, melodic voice echoed up the grand staircase.

A wave of pure, absolute nausea washed over his entire body.

He had to go downstairs and look into the eyes of the woman who had orchestrated his near-death experience in the freezing taiga.

He took three deep breaths, forcing his facial muscles to relax into a mask of calm obedience.

Daniel walked down the sweeping staircase and entered the sunlit, state-of-the-art kitchen.

Elena was standing at the marble island, humming a cheerful tune as she sliced fresh bread.

Elias was sitting at the breakfast bar, drinking black coffee and watching the security monitors.

Daniel looked at the massive, bearded forest ranger, and a terrifying realization clicked into place.

Elias wasn't a heroic bystander who happened to save them; he was Elena’s hired gun, her loyal accomplice from the very beginning.

“There is my handsome boy,” Elena smiled warmly, handing Daniel a plate of warm sandwiches.

“Thank you, Mom,” Daniel replied, forcing a soft, entirely fabricated smile onto his face.

Emma ran into the kitchen, entirely oblivious to the dark, suffocating tension, and hugged Elena tightly.

Elena kissed the top of Emma's head, but Daniel saw the way her eyes flicked toward the large digital calendar on the wall.

Friday the 18th was circled in thick red marker.

It was Daniel’s eighteenth birthday, the exact day he would legally inherit full control of the fifty-million-dollar trust fund.

He suddenly realized why they were still alive.

Elena couldn't touch the money until Daniel was old enough to legally sign it over to her.

He had exactly four days to figure out how to escape a fortress designed by the monsters who were pretending to love him.
