Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Truth

Two months later, the brutal, terrifying winter felt like a distant, fading nightmare.
Elias had made a complete and full recovery, and he was officially hired as the head of security for their sprawling new estate.
Vera had been rescued from the collapsed mine by federal authorities, only to be sentenced to thirty years in a maximum-security prison for attempted murder.
Richard’s massive corporate empire was completely dismantled, and the stolen funds were legally returned to the families he had ruined.
The fifty-million-dollar trust fund was securely transferred to Daniel and Emma, completely protected from any outside interference.
Elena had legally regained full custody of her children, and they were finally living the warm, peaceful life they deserved.
Daniel sat in the sunlit library of their new home, helping Emma with her homework while a warm fire crackled in the hearth.
He looked at his mother, who was smiling happily as she prepared lunch in the kitchen, and felt an overwhelming wave of gratitude.
The broken family was finally whole again, entirely free from the dark, murderous shadows of their past.
Later that evening, Daniel was looking for a spare pen in the heavy oak desk inside his mother's private office.
He opened the bottom drawer and noticed a small, locked leather journal tucked entirely out of sight.
He recognized the journal; it was the same one Elena had kept by her bedside right before she originally disappeared two years ago.
He carefully picked the small brass lock with a paperclip, purely out of idle curiosity, and opened to the final written page.
The neat, elegant handwriting completely shattered the peaceful illusion of his perfect new life.
“Richard thinks he is poisoning me, but I have been secretly replacing his pills with my own heavy sedatives for weeks,” Elena had written.

Daniel’s blood ran completely cold as he read the final, horrifying sentence.
“Once Elias helps me fake my death, I will finally have the time I need to frame Richard for everything and take the entire trust fund exclusively for myself.”
