Chapter 18 - The Mother's Wrath

Daniel pulled Emma up from the mud, firmly gripping the heavy, cold pistol in his right hand.
They scrambled out of the dense woods and stumbled back onto the dark, rain-slicked highway.
The headlights of Elias’s abandoned tactical SUV were still shining brightly into the driving rain.
Daniel rushed toward the vehicle, planning to throw Emma into the passenger seat and drive as far away as possible.
As they reached the rear bumper, a figure suddenly stepped out from the dark shadows behind the SUV.
Elena stood perfectly still in the torrential downpour, completely drenched, holding a sleek silver revolver.
The loving, maternal facade was entirely gone, completely replaced by a terrifying, soulless greed.
“You ruined everything!” Elena screamed over the howling wind, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated fury.
She aimed the revolver directly at Daniel’s head, her finger trembling violently on the trigger.
“I spent two years living in a filthy cabin, eating canned beans, just to get that money, and you are not going to take it away from me!”
Daniel stepped in front of Emma, raising Elias’s suppressed pistol and aiming it squarely at his mother’s chest.
He felt absolutely no love for the woman standing in front of him; he only felt disgust.
“The money is completely gone, Mom,” Daniel yelled back, his voice incredibly steady and cold.
Elena laughed hysterically, shaking her head. “You are lying. The trust transferred to your name at midnight.”
Daniel reached into his pocket with his left hand and pulled out his wet cell phone.
“I wasn't just downloading your private confessions on the server, Mom. I was bypassing the banking protocols,” Daniel revealed loudly.
He explained that at exactly 12:01 AM, he had initiated a massive, irreversible digital wire transfer.

He had sent the entire fifty-million-dollar trust fund directly to dozens of anonymous, international charities.
“There is no money left to steal. You murdered Richard for absolutely nothing,” Daniel stated firmly.
