Chapter 6 - The Mother's Return

Daniel stared at the woman in absolute, paralyzing disbelief as his brain violently rejected what his eyes were seeing.

Elena rushed forward, dropping to her knees and wrapping both of her children in a desperate, crushing embrace.

She smelled like pine needles, woodsmoke, and the faint, familiar scent of vanilla that Daniel remembered from his childhood.

“My beautiful babies, I am so sorry I took so long to find you,” Elena sobbed, kissing their cold faces repeatedly.

Elias picked up his hunting rifle, completely unsurprised by the miraculous reunion.

“I told you I would keep them safe until you returned, Elena,” Elias said quietly.

Daniel pulled back slightly, looking between his mother and the stoic forest ranger in utter confusion.

Elena quickly explained the terrifying reality of the last two years.

Richard had indeed tried to murder her in the forest, heavily drugging her and leaving her in the freezing taiga to die.

But Elias had found her barely alive and smuggled her to a private, off-grid medical contact to recover.

They had deliberately staged the frozen Jane Doe body for the police to trick Richard into believing he had succeeded.

Elena knew if she revealed she was alive without concrete evidence of his crimes, Richard would use his immense wealth to destroy her completely and take the children.

She had spent the last two years secretly building a massive federal case against his corporate fraud and money laundering to guarantee he would go to prison forever.

Tonight was supposed to be the night the FBI finally raided Richard's estate.

But Richard had panicked about the expiring trust fund and moved his murderous timeline up unexpectedly.

Vera groaned from the floor, spitting blood and looking at Elena with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You are too late, Elena. Richard has a dozen armed men surrounding the exits of this mine,” Vera laughed bitterly.

Elena stood up, her maternal warmth instantly replaced by a fierce, uncompromising determination.

She reached into her heavy winter coat and pulled out a military-grade satellite phone.

“They aren't surrounding us, Vera. They are trapped with us,” Elena stated coldly.

She pressed a single button on the phone, and a massive, deafening explosion rocked the ceiling of the cavern.
