Chapter 9 - The Federal Trap

The flashing red and blue lights painted the pharmacy walls in a terrifying glow.

Dante tried to push Mara toward the back exit, urging her to save herself and run away.

Mara stubbornly refused to leave his side, wrapping her arm tightly around his waist.

She dragged him out into the alley, hoping to disappear into the heavy city shadows.

Dozens of armed tactical officers completely surrounded them, their weapons drawn and aimed.

But these were not the corrupt local cops Viktor had paid off.

These men were wearing dark jackets with large yellow FBI letters printed on the back.

The lead federal agent stepped forward and lowered his heavy assault rifle.

He ordered his medics to immediately attend to Dante's severe gunshot wound.

Dante was confused, completely unsure why the federal government was actively saving a mafia boss.

The agent explained that they had been trying to build a RICO case against Viktor Volkov for five years.

They had received an anonymous, encrypted audio file just twenty minutes ago.

The file contained crystal-clear audio of Sienna and Viktor confessing to multiple murders and corporate espionage in the basement tunnel.

Dante looked at Mara in pure shock.

Mara pulled a small, waterproof recording device from the pocket of her simple housekeeper uniform.

She explained that she always carried it to protect herself from the abusive guests in the penthouse.

She had recorded every single word of the villain's evil monologue before breaking the steam pipe.

The federal agent smiled and told Dante he was completely cleared of all charges.

They loaded Dante onto a stretcher, and he refused to let go of Mara's hand.

He loudly demanded that she ride in the ambulance with him to the hospital.
