Chapter 6 - The Asylum

Leo grabbed a heavy metal chair and smashed it against the reinforced glass window of the vault.

The glass didn't even crack.

The green gas was filling the room, burning Leo's throat and making his eyes water.

Monica fell to her knees, violently coughing up blood.

Leo noticed a small maintenance grate near the floorboards.

He used the broken leg of the chair to pry the metal cover off.

“Crawl through!” Leo yelled, pushing Monica into the narrow air duct.

He squeezed in right behind her just as the vault completely filled with toxic gas.

They crawled for what felt like hours until they fell out into a muddy alleyway.

Monica gasped for fresh air, her face pale and covered in dirt.

“Evelyn played us,” Monica wheezed.

“She gave you a fake key to distract Julian.”

Leo shook his head, realizing the brilliance of his grandmother’s plan.

“She didn't give it to distract Julian, she gave it to protect the real key,” Leo said.

“Where is it?” Monica asked.

“She swallowed the real pearl when she fell out of the wheelchair,” Leo realized.

They had to break Evelyn out of the private psychiatric hospital before Julian realized the truth.

They stole a delivery van and drove to the Blackwood Asylum on the edge of town.

Leo picked the lock of the back service door, using his maintenance skills to bypass the alarms.

They crept down the sterile white hallways until they found Room 402.

Leo kicked the door open, ready to fight the guards.

But the room was completely empty.

The bedsheets were torn, and a massive pool of fresh blood soaked the mattress.
