Chapter 2 - The Hidden Elevator

Julian adjusted his expensive silk tie.
“Hello, Aunt Evelyn,” he said with a venomous grin.
“Your time pretending to run this empire is officially over.”
Evelyn did not show a single ounce of fear.
She looked down at Leo, who was still kneeling on the marble floor.
“Use the key on the private showroom door, Leo,” she whispered.
“Don’t let him move!” Julian shouted at his armed guards.
Leo didn’t think about the consequences.
He lunged away from the guards and sprinted toward the heavy mahogany door.
A gunshot rang out, shattering a glass display case right next to his shoulder.
Leo jammed the tiny gold key into the hidden lock beneath the door handle.
The heavy wood hissed and slid open automatically.
He rushed back, grabbed the handles of Evelyn’s wheelchair, and shoved her inside.
Bullets chipped the marble floor behind them as they crossed the threshold.
Leo slammed his hand against the emergency close button.
The door sealed shut, blocking out Julian’s furious screams.
Leo gasped for air, realizing they were not in a showroom at all.
They were inside a massive, stainless steel industrial elevator.
The elevator jolted and began to descend deep into the earth.
Evelyn looked at Leo and sighed heavily.
“You have your mother’s brave eyes,” she said softly.
Before Leo could ask what she meant, the elevator suddenly screeched to a violent halt.
The lights completely died.
Julian’s voice crackled over the intercom speaker in the pitch-black darkness.

“Did you really think I wouldn’t cut the power cables?” Julian mocked.
The sound of thick steel cables snapping echoed loudly above their heads.
