Chapter 3 - The Forgotten Heir

The elevator plunged downward for three terrifying seconds.
Then the emergency brakes engaged with a deafening squeal of metal.
Leo was thrown against the steel wall, his shoulder screaming in pain.
Evelyn’s wheelchair tipped backward, but Leo caught it just in time.
Red emergency lights flickered on, bathing the metal box in a bloody glow.
“Who are you?” Leo demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs.
“Why did you say I have my mother’s eyes?”
Evelyn reached out and gently touched his cheek.
“Your mother was Sarah Vance, my only daughter,” she revealed.
Leo’s mind spun out of control.
His mother was a poor waitress who died in a car crash ten years ago.
“That is impossible,” Leo whispered.
“I disowned her when she refused to marry a wealthy investor,” Evelyn explained, tears falling down her wrinkled face.
“It was the biggest mistake of my life, and Julian made sure I never found you until today.”
Suddenly, the roof hatch of the elevator was violently ripped open.
Three men wearing tactical gear dropped into the confined space.
One of them hit Leo in the jaw with the butt of a rifle.
Leo collapsed to the floor, tasting warm copper in his mouth.
The men grabbed Evelyn’s wheelchair and began hoisting her out through the roof.
Julian peered down through the hatch, holding a flashlight.
“Take her to the asylum,” Julian ordered his men.
He looked down at Leo, who was bleeding on the floor.

“And toss a grenade down there to finish off the janitor.”
A small, green explosive cylinder tumbled through the hatch and landed right next to Leo’s hand.
