Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

The SUV sped through the rain-soaked streets of the financial district.
“Why would Julian try to kill you?” Leo asked, wiping blood from his chin.
“I helped him falsify the company ledgers to drain Evelyn’s accounts,” Monica confessed bitterly.
“Now that he has the company, I am a loose end.”
Monica gripped the steering wheel tightly.
“The gold key you have doesn't open a physical door, Leo.”
“It activates a digital master vault at the central bank.”
“If we get there before Julian accesses the accounts, we can freeze his assets.”
Leo pulled the tiny gold key from his pocket and stared at it.
They arrived at the towering glass building of the city’s central bank.
Monica led him through a secret underground parking entrance.
They reached the maximum-security deposit room.
Leo inserted the tiny gold key into the central computer terminal.
The screen flashed a bright, angry red.
An automated voice echoed through the silent room.
“Access denied.”
“Warning: Unauthorized key detected.”
Monica’s eyes widened in sheer panic.
“That’s impossible!” she screamed.
Leo looked closely at the key and realized the gold plating was chipping away, revealing cheap plastic underneath.
The key was a fake.
Suddenly, the heavy steel doors of the vault slammed shut, locking them inside.
A digital timer appeared on the computer screen, counting down from ten seconds.

“Initiating security purge,” the automated voice announced.
Poisonous green gas began hissing rapidly from the ceiling vents.
