Chapter 6 - The Override

A loud, robotic emergency alarm began blaring rapidly through the hotel's hidden surround speakers.
The automated voice calmly announced that the alpha lockdown protocol was now fully active.
Julian watched in absolute horror as thick steel vault shutters slammed down over the oceanfront windows.
"What did you just do to my building?" Julian screamed, taking a very nervous step backward.
"My father built this entire hotel with his own hands, Julian," Sarah reminded him with icy calm.
"He specifically designed this ballroom to become an impenetrable, weapon-neutralizing vault in case of an emergency."
The hired mercenaries suddenly found their advanced electronic weapons locking up and completely powering down.
A localized electromagnetic pulse hidden in the ceiling had completely fried their illegal, modern firearms.
Maxwell's security team smiled widely and cracked their knuckles, stepping forward with renewed confidence.
Now that the dangerous guns were totally useless, it was finally a fair physical fight.
Julian looked around frantically, realizing his expensive hired thugs were suddenly terrified and defenseless.
"Do not just stand there, grab her right now!" Julian ordered his lead, hulking mercenary.
The massive man rushed the stage stairs, trying to violently tackle Sarah to the ground.
Maxwell aggressively swung his heavy wooden cane, catching the mercenary right in the kneecap.
The brute howled in agonizing pain and collapsed onto the carpeted steps instantly.
Sarah simply stood at the podium, watching the pathetic, crumbling display of Julian's failing power.
"You have absolutely nowhere left to run in this city," Sarah told him with fierce finality.
Julian gritted his teeth and pulled a sleek, highly encrypted hard drive from his pocket.

"If I am going down today, I am deleting the offshore bank accounts with me," he threatened wildly.
He raised his thumb high, preparing to press the permanent kill switch on the black device.
