Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Bag

Dante hurled the canvas bag across the kitchen and drew his weapon in a fluid motion.
He aimed the gun at Sarah and demanded to know who planted the tracking device.
Sarah backed away in sheer horror and swore she had absolutely no idea the tracker was there.
She emptied her pockets and frantically pleaded with him to believe her innocence.
Dante stared into her terrified blue eyes and realized she was telling the absolute truth.
He crushed the tracking device under the heel of his heavy combat boot.
He realized the burned woman at the clinic must have slipped it into the bag during their meeting.
This meant the burned woman was not trying to help Dante save his children at all.
She was using Sarah as a human compass to locate the Moretti family's hidden sanctuary.
Dante told Sarah to pack whatever food she could carry because they had to leave immediately.
He went to the bedroom and woke the twins with quiet and calm instructions.
They loaded into the backup vehicle hidden under a camouflage tarp behind the cabin.
As they drove down the dark mountain road Dante tried to piece together the identity of the burned woman.
He remembered the Palermo folk song and the terrifying message about the empty grave.
He made a decision that broke every rule he had established since his wife passed away.
He drove them to the private cemetery where the Moretti family mausoleum was located.
The graveyard was covered in a thick blanket of fog that made the statues look like weeping ghosts.
Dante grabbed a heavy iron crowbar from the trunk and walked toward his wife's marble tomb.
He ignored Sarah's fearful protests and jammed the crowbar into the seal of the stone lid.
He pushed with all his tremendous strength and the heavy marble slab slid crashing to the floor.

Dante shined his flashlight into the silk lined casket.
The casket was completely empty except for a single photograph of Sarah Jenkins as a child.
