Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

Vanessa stepped out of the flashy sports car, holding a long-barreled, highly dangerous shotgun in her hands.
She looked at the destroyed ambulance, the bleeding lawyer on the ground, and then directly at me.
She aggressively cocked the shotgun, pointing the lethal weapon squarely at my brother's chest.
She loudly ordered Ethan to drop the metal tire iron and step far away from David.
Ethan hesitated for a moment, looking back at me and my crying newborn son with deep concern.
He slowly and reluctantly lowered the metal bar, raising his good hand in a gesture of surrender.
Vanessa sneered confidently, fiercely demanding that David get up and finish the specific job he was highly paid to do.
David groaned in pure agony, helplessly clutching his shattered knee, completely unable to stand up.
He angrily yelled at Vanessa to shoot us herself and stop wasting precious time.
Vanessa hesitated for a crucial fraction of a second, her manicured hands trembling slightly on the heavy weapon.
She had successfully manipulated everyone else to do the incredibly dirty work, but she had never actually killed anyone herself.
I bravely stepped out from behind the SUV, holding my baby tightly and securely against my chest.
I looked Vanessa directly in her panicked eyes and told her the absolute truth about David's secret plan.
I clearly explained that David had already drafted legal documents transferring the entire company to an offshore account in his name only.
I boldly stated that she was never going to see a single dime of that twelve million dollars no matter who died tonight.
Vanessa quickly glanced down at David, a highly visible flicker of doubt crossing her pale face.
David panicked instantly and screamed that I was completely lying just to save my own life.
But Vanessa was a professional con artist, and she easily recognized another con artist when she saw one.
She slowly lowered the shotgun away from Ethan and pointed it directly down at David's head.
David quickly raised his hands in absolute terror, desperately begging her to be reasonable and stick to the plan.
The piercing, unmistakable sound of approaching police sirens suddenly echoed loudly through the empty highway.
Vanessa instantly realized she was completely out of time, leverage, and options.
She threw the heavy shotgun to the ground in frustration, ran back to her sports car, and sped off into the dark night.
The real, heavily armed state police finally arrived, instantly swarming the entire scene with their weapons drawn.
They swiftly arrested David right there on the asphalt while professional paramedics rushed directly to my side.

But I had absolutely no idea the worst monster of all was still quietly waiting for me.
