Chapter 1 - The Message

The screen of my phone illuminated my pale face in the pitch-black hospital room.
Three small checkmarks appeared next to the audio file on my secure messaging app.
The recording had successfully delivered to my attorney, my secure cloud server, and my older brother, Ethan.
I shoved the device back under my pillow just as my heart began to hammer violently against my ribs.
I knew I had to get out of this private maternity suite before Daniel or Dr. Hale returned.
The heavy silence of the room felt suffocating, broken only by the steady beeping of my heart monitor.
I threw off the scratchy hospital blanket and swung my swollen legs over the edge of the mattress.
The cold tile floor sent a sharp shiver straight up my spine as my bare feet touched the ground.
A sudden, paralyzing pain shot through my lower abdomen, making me gasp aloud in the dark.
My body was actively preparing for labor, but my mind was entirely focused on immediate survival.
I grabbed my thin hospital gown and reached for my duffel bag on the nearby visitor chair.
I desperately needed my clothes and my wallet if I was going to make it out of this building alive.
Before my trembling fingers could touch the canvas strap, the heavy wooden door of the suite clicked open.
A tall, stern-looking nurse walked into the room carrying a rattling silver medical tray.
The bright hallway light spilled into the room, blinding me for a fraction of a second.
She stared at me with cold, calculating eyes that held absolutely no compassion or warmth.
She ordered me to get back into bed immediately because Dr. Hale was ready to start the induction process.
I took a step back, wrapping my arms defensively around my pregnant stomach to protect my baby.
I told her I had changed my mind about the procedure and wanted to transfer to a different hospital right now.
The nurse did not blink, nor did she step aside to let me pass through the narrow doorway.
Instead, she pulled a large plastic syringe filled with a cloudy yellow liquid from her scrub pocket.
She informed me that Dr. Hale had anticipated my anxiety and prescribed a very strong sedative to help me relax.
I backed away toward the bathroom, realizing she was clearly part of the terrifying plan to silence me permanently.
I opened my mouth and screamed for help at the top of my lungs.
The suite door swung open again, hitting the wall with a loud, aggressive thud.
My husband Daniel stepped inside the room, quickly closing and locking the door behind him to muffle my screams.
He looked perfectly calm, wearing the expensive navy anniversary suit that I had bought him just last month.
He looked down at his own glowing smartphone screen, then raised his dark eyes to meet mine.
His jaw was clenched tight, and a vein throbbed visibly on his forehead.

He took a slow, menacing step toward me, completely ignoring the frightened tears streaming down my face.
He asked me why my brother Ethan had just called his personal cell phone and threatened to kill him.
