Chapter 2 - The Lockdown

I stared at Daniel, desperately trying to keep my facial expression perfectly blank.

I knew if I admitted to sending the recording, he would kill me right here in this room.

I lied and said I had absolutely no idea why Ethan would say something like that.

I claimed my severe pregnancy hormones were making me panic, and I just wanted to go home to rest.

Daniel grabbed my arm with a grip so incredibly tight that I felt bruises forming instantly.

He leaned in close, his expensive cologne making my stomach turn, and whispered that nobody was going home tonight.

The stern nurse stepped forward with the uncapped needle, her face completely devoid of human emotion.

Daniel told her to administer the lethal injection quickly before my unpredictable brother arrived at the hospital.

I fought back with all the desperate strength a heavily pregnant woman could possibly muster.

I kicked the silver tray out of the nurse's hands, sending metal surgical instruments clattering loudly across the tile floor.

Daniel cursed viciously and tried to pin both of my arms forcefully behind my back.

I turned my head and sank my teeth deeply into his wrist, tasting salty blood almost instantly.

He yelled in pain and released his iron grip on me for just a fraction of a second.

I used that brief moment to sprint toward the bathroom and slam the heavy wooden door shut.

I slid the metal deadbolt into place just as Daniel threw his entire body weight against the other side of the wood.

He started pounding frantically on the door, shouting that I was only making this horrific situation worse for myself.

I ignored his threats and frantically searched the tiny bathroom for any possible weapon to defend myself.

My phone buzzed silently in my hospital gown pocket, displaying an urgent text message from Ethan.

Ethan wrote that the local police refused to intervene without a warrant, so he was coming to get me himself.

He said he had just pulled into the hospital parking garage and was exactly two minutes away from my room.

A massive wave of relief washed over me, knowing my brother was finally here.

Suddenly, Daniel stopped pounding his fists on the bathroom door.

A chilling, heavy silence filled the private maternity suite.

Then, I heard the highly distinctive sound of a metal key sliding into the bathroom lock from the outside.

Dr. Hale spoke through the thin wood, his voice smooth and terrifyingly calm.

He said hospitals do not install locks that the chief medical staff cannot bypass.
