Chapter 8 - The Wreckage

The world spun wildly in a chaotic, terrifying blur of shattering glass and crushing, heavy metal.
I curled my entire body completely around my baby, desperately shielding him from the violent, bone-rattling impact.
The heavy ambulance slid sideways across the empty highway before finally coming to a jarring, abrupt halt.
The overturned interior was extremely dark, rapidly filling with the terrifying smell of leaking gasoline and smoke.
My baby was crying incredibly loudly, a beautiful sound that gave me the instant strength to open my eyes.
We had miraculously survived the horrific crash, and my precious son was completely unharmed in my arms.
I looked across the sideways cabin and saw the fake paramedic unconscious, completely pinned under a heavy metal medical cabinet.
David was groaning loudly in intense pain near the back doors, his suppressed pistol lost somewhere in the twisted wreckage.
I quickly unbuckled myself from the hanging gurney and carefully crawled toward the shattered rear window.
I kicked the remaining jagged glass out of the metal frame and climbed out into the freezing, chaotic night air.
The heavily damaged black SUV that had rammed us was sitting a few yards away, its front end completely destroyed and smoking.
The driver’s side door groaned loudly as it opened, and a tall figure stepped out into the flickering streetlights.
It was my brother, Ethan.
He had stolen a vehicle from the hospital garage and successfully tracked the ambulance using my phone's GPS location.
His left arm was in a bloody, makeshift sling, and his face was covered in dark soot from the crash.
He limped quickly toward me, wrapping his good, strong arm protectively around me and the crying baby.
I cried hysterically against his shoulder, rapidly telling him that David was the one behind absolutely everything.
Ethan nodded grimly, pulling a heavy steel tire iron from his jacket pocket.
He firmly told me to get back and hide safely behind the wreckage of the SUV.
David slowly crawled out of the ambulance wreckage, desperately clutching a piece of jagged metal as a makeshift weapon.
He saw Ethan and laughed mockingly, ridiculing my brother for thinking he could ever win this fight.
David suddenly lunged at Ethan, swinging the sharp, dangerous metal wildly at his head.
Ethan easily dodged the clumsy attack and swung the heavy tire iron directly into David's right knee.
The bone snapped loudly with a sickening crack, instantly dropping the corrupt lawyer to the cold pavement.
Ethan stood tall over him, breathing heavily, completely ready to end the threat once and for all.

But before Ethan could strike again, the blinding headlights of another car suddenly illuminated the dark highway.
Vanessa’s bright red sports car screeched to a sudden halt right next to us.
