Chapter 4 - The Edge of the Bridge

The devastating impact sent our heavy truck violently spinning across multiple lanes of wet asphalt.
Shattered glass rained down entirely over the interior of the cab as I desperately shielded my face.
Wade fought the spinning steering wheel with massive, bulging muscles, trying to regain control of the vehicle.
We skidded violently toward the crumbling concrete barriers of the city's highest suspension bridge.
The truck slammed incredibly hard into the retaining wall, coming to a shuddering and terrifying halt.
The front half of our vehicle was teetering dangerously over the sheer drop into the freezing, black river below.
I gasped for air, turning frantically to check the back seat to ensure the baby was unharmed.
The tiny infant was crying softly, completely terrified by the noise but miraculously safe in his blanket cocoon.
Wade kicked his jammed door open, his forehead bleeding heavily from a deep gash near his hairline.
He looked through the shattered back window and saw two more armored SUVs actively blocking the bridge behind us.
Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries poured out of the vehicles, marching methodically toward our crippled truck.
Wade reached under his seat and pulled out a heavy, pump-action shotgun from a hidden compartment.
He looked at me with an incredibly fierce expression and ordered me to hide on the floorboard with his grandson.
He promised me that he would hold them off for as long as he had breath in his lungs.
I pleaded with him not to step out onto the bridge because it was an absolute suicide mission.
Wade simply smiled a sad, loving smile and said that a father always protects his family at any cost.
He stepped out into the freezing rain and racked the shotgun with a loud, intimidating clack.

A single, high-powered gunshot immediately rang out through the foggy night air.
Wade's massive body violently jerked backward, and he slumped lifelessly against the shattered windshield of the truck.
