Chapter 1 - The Secret on the Wrist

The neonatal intensive care unit was entirely silent except for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitors.

Wade had been sitting in the exact same rocking chair for twelve straight hours.

His massive, tattooed arms created a perfectly safe cradle for the tiny and fragile infant.

My shift was finally ending, but I simply could not bring myself to leave them alone.

I grabbed a fresh bottle of warm formula and a clean receiving blanket from the supply cart.

I walked over quietly and reached out to gently check the sleeping baby’s temperature.

As Wade slightly adjusted his protective grip, the disposable blue hospital gown slipped down his massive right forearm.

That was the exact moment I finally saw the heavily scarred skin surrounding his wrist.

Etched deeply into his flesh was a faded, crude tattoo of a very specific name and birthdate.

It read "Maya Elena Miller" in incredibly distinctive, swirling cursive lettering.

I gasped so loudly that another nurse across the room immediately turned her head.

I instantly recognized that exact name because it was listed on the fake identification left by the young woman who had abandoned this baby.

Wade looked up at me with heavy tears pooling in his fierce and dark eyes.

He whispered that he had spent the last three agonizing years desperately searching for his runaway daughter.

He had never stopped looking for Maya after she vanished into the dangerous criminal underworld of the city.

He only came to the hospital because a confidential informant told him a girl matching her description had just given birth.

Before I could even fully process this heartbreaking revelation, the heavy double doors of the NICU violently swung open.

Two large men in tailored black suits stepped into the sterile room with aggressive purpose.

Their hands hovered dangerously over their waistbands, clearly concealing heavy firearms beneath their jackets.

They flashed cheap counterfeit badges and loudly demanded to take immediate physical custody of Baby Boy Miller.

Wade slowly stood up from the rocking chair, shielding the fragile infant completely against his massive chest.

The taller man smirked coldly and reached inside his suit jacket to pull out a silenced pistol right in the middle of the nursery.
