Chapter 5 - The Highway Chase

The screech of the brakes echoed terribly through the garage as I violently stopped the SUV just inches from the jammed steel door.
We were completely trapped inside a metal cage, and a dozen heavily armed men were sprinting rapidly toward our position.
Lorenzo cursed under his breath, his face pale and soaked in a cold, dangerous sweat.
"Put the car in reverse, Elena, we are going to ram the door off its hinges," Lorenzo ordered weakly.
I didn't hesitate, throwing the heavy gear shift into reverse and backing up fifty yards to gain maximum momentum.
I gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned completely white, praying the reinforced bumper would hold.
I slammed my foot on the gas pedal, launching the massive vehicle forward like a guided missile.
We hit the jammed steel gate with a world-shattering impact that deployed the front airbags instantly.
The sheer force of the collision tore the heavy metal tracks from the concrete walls, sending the door crashing out into the street.
I blindly navigated through the white powder of the deflated airbags, turning the SUV aggressively onto the slick, wet highway.
We were finally out of the estate, but the nightmare was far from over.
In the rearview mirror, I saw the blinding headlights of three black pursuit vehicles roaring out of the broken garage.
Falcone's men were relentless, and their sleek sports cars were rapidly gaining on our heavy, battered SUV.
"Keep the vehicle perfectly steady," Lorenzo grunted, forcing his bleeding body to lean out the shattered passenger window.
He raised his pistol and fired three precise, measured shots into the darkness behind us.
The lead pursuit car’s front tire exploded violently, sending the vehicle flipping uncontrollably across the highway divider.
I let out a desperate gasp of relief, hoping we could finally lose them in the maze of city streets.
My relief was completely shattered when Marcus leaned out the window of the second pursuit car holding an RPG.
The blinding flash of a rocket propelled grenade illuminated the rainy night sky, heading straight for our rear bumper.
I jerked the steering wheel violently to the right, narrowly dodging the explosive projectile by a mere fraction of an inch.
The rocket completely decimated an empty billboard beside the highway, showering our vehicle in burning shrapnel.
The violent swerve caused our heavy SUV to lose traction on the rain-slicked asphalt, spinning wildly out of control.
I fought desperately with the steering wheel, but the vehicle slammed fiercely into the concrete guardrail.
The impact shattered the rest of the windows, plunging the interior of the car into a chaotic, dizzying darkness.
When the spinning finally stopped, I looked over at the passenger seat in absolute horror.

Lorenzo was completely unconscious, his head slumped forward and his pulse terrifyingly weak.
Before I could even unbuckle my seatbelt, my driver’s side door was violently ripped open from the outside.
