Chapter 11 - The Poisoned Lineage

The crisp white paper in my hands felt heavier than a loaded weapon.
I stared blindly at the black ink of the genetic report, the terrifying reality of the doctor's words completely paralyzing my lungs.
Lorenzo Rossi, the ruthless mafia boss who had torn down an entire city to protect this boy, was not the biological father of little Leo.
The father was Marcus, the abusive, sociopathic monster I had killed on the rainy highway months ago.
"How is this clinically possible?" I whispered to the terrified chief medical officer, my voice trembling in the quiet hallway of the penthouse.
The doctor swallowed hard, his eyes nervously darting toward the heavy mahogany doors of the nursery, terrified that Lorenzo might overhear us.
"Mr. Rossi's late wife, Isabella, must have carried on a prolonged affair before her tragic death," the doctor explained quietly.
"The timelines align perfectly. She became pregnant, passed the child off as the Rossi heir, and died in childbirth before anyone could ever discover the truth."
My mind violently spun as the darkest puzzle pieces finally slammed into place.
Isabella Rossi had not been a loyal, tragic mafia wife; she had been sleeping with a brutal street thug, entirely compromising the most powerful bloodline in the state.
Marcus had not just been a random debt collector or a pawn for Don Falcone.
He had orchestrated the attack on the Rossi estate because he genuinely wanted to claim his biological son and leverage the child for Lorenzo's immense fortune.
I dismissed the doctor, folding the genetic report and shoving it deep into the pocket of my silk dress.
I walked slowly back into the nursery, where Lorenzo was gently rocking Lily in his massive, tattooed arms.
He looked up at me with an expression of pure, unadulterated peace, completely unaware that his entire legacy was built on a horrific lie.
I looked at little Leo, sleeping soundly in his crib, oblivious to the toxic blood running through his tiny veins.
I had to tell Lorenzo the truth, even if it completely shattered the beautiful, fragile world we had just fought so hard to build.
I walked over, gently taking Lily from his arms and placing her in her bassinet, before turning to face the man I loved.
"Lorenzo, the doctor did not just bring routine blood work tonight," I started, my voice tight with unshed tears.
I pulled the folded paper from my pocket and handed it to him, my hands shaking violently.
Lorenzo frowned, unfolding the document and scanning the clinical data with his sharp, calculating eyes.
I watched his handsome face cycle through profound confusion, devastating realization, and finally, a terrifying, absolute rage.

The air in the nursery grew incredibly cold as the truth of Isabella's ultimate betrayal washed over him.
He looked down at Leo, the child he had loved, protected, and bled for, realizing the boy belonged to the monster who had tried to kill us.
