Chapter 13 - The Shadow Vault

I stared at the glowing tablet in Lorenzo's hands, a cold dread washing completely over my body.
"That is physically impossible," I whispered. "I saw the medical reports. Isabella hemorrhaged during childbirth."
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened, his dark eyes fixed intensely on the live security footage playing on the screen.
The video feed showed a tall, elegant woman wearing a dark trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat, completely concealing her face.
She moved with absolute, familiar grace, effortlessly navigating the laser grid that surrounded the Rossi family’s private assets.
"It is her," Lorenzo stated, his voice completely devoid of any human emotion.
"She faked her own death to escape the mafia life, leaving me to raise her bastard child while she disappeared into the shadows."
The ultimate betrayal was completely sickening; Isabella had manipulated everyone, using Marcus as a pawn and leaving me to clean up her mess.
"Why would she come back now?" I asked, my mind racing through terrifying possibilities.
"Because the vault contains the master ledgers for the entire international shipping conglomerate," Lorenzo answered grimly.
If Isabella acquired those ledgers, she could completely dismantle Lorenzo's legitimate business empire and drain billions of dollars in a single night.
Lorenzo immediately pulled his tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster, checking the magazine with practiced, lethal precision.
"Lock down the penthouse, Marco. No one goes in or out, and put an armed guard on the nursery door," Lorenzo commanded.
I grabbed his arm before he could walk out of the room, my protective instincts violently overriding my fear.
"I am coming with you," I declared firmly, refusing to be left behind like a helpless victim.
Lorenzo shook his head, his expression softening for a fraction of a second.
"It is entirely too dangerous, Elena. You need to stay here and protect the children."
"Isabella knows I killed Marcus," I argued fiercely, looking deeply into his dark eyes.
"She orchestrated this entire nightmare. She stole my peace, and I am going to help you burn her completely to the ground."
Lorenzo stared at me, recognizing the fierce, unyielding fire burning in my soul.
He finally nodded, handing me a compact, suppressed pistol from his secondary holster.
We left the penthouse under the heavy protection of Marco's elite guards and sped through the dark city streets toward the ruined Rossi estate.
The old mansion was exactly as we had left it months ago, heavily scarred by bullet holes and fire damage.
We slipped silently through the side entrance, descending into the dark, subterranean tunnels that led to the family vault.
The heavy steel door of the vault was standing wide open, the complex locking mechanism completely overridden.
Lorenzo raised his weapon, stepping cautiously into the dimly lit room.

The vault was entirely empty, the master ledgers completely gone.
But resting perfectly on a stack of empty cash pallets was a sleek, black envelope addressed to me in familiar, silver calligraphy.
