Chapter 2 - The Secret Passage

The acrid black smoke rapidly filled the nursery, blinding everyone in the room and burning my lungs.
Greta coughed violently, blindly waving her suppressed pistol in the dark as she desperately tried to find Lorenzo.
I dropped to my knees, cradling Leo securely in my arms to keep him below the toxic cloud of smoke.
A heavy thud echoed through the darkness, followed by the sickening sound of a bone breaking.
Lorenzo emerged from the gray haze, his shoulder bleeding heavily, but he was holding Greta's weapon in his uninjured hand.
Greta lay completely unconscious on the plush nursery rug.
Outside the locked door, Marcus began bashing a heavy object against the wood, splintering the frame with every strike.
"We have to get out of here right now, or your ex-boyfriend is going to kill us all," Lorenzo commanded, his voice tight with pain.
I looked at the reinforced windows, knowing a drop from the third floor would be absolute suicide.
"There is a hidden service corridor built behind the main linen closet," I whispered urgently, pointing toward the back wall.
I had discovered the old architectural secret while dusting the nursery baseboards during my first week on the job.
Lorenzo nodded, using his good arm to push the massive wooden wardrobe aside with a terrifying display of raw strength.
A small, concealed wooden door was perfectly hidden behind the floral wallpaper.
I quickly unlatched the rusty lock and squeezed into the pitch-black passage, holding Leo tightly against my chest.
Lorenzo followed right behind me, pulling the heavy wardrobe back into place just as the main nursery door shattered into pieces.
We stood in the narrow, claustrophobic darkness of the secret tunnel, listening to Marcus curse loudly in the room we had just escaped.
"Where did they go?" Marcus screamed, tearing the nursery apart in a frantic rage.
Lorenzo leaned heavily against the dusty bricks, his breathing becoming shallow and erratic from the gunshot wound.
I reached out in the dark, my fingers brushing against the warm, sticky blood soaking through his expensive dress shirt.
"You are losing way too much blood, Mr. Rossi," I whispered, tearing a piece of my maid's apron to press against his wound.
"Keep moving, Elena," he ordered, gritting his teeth as he pushed me forward through the dusty corridor.
We navigated the blind, winding passage for what felt like hours, descending two steep flights of hidden wooden stairs.
I finally pushed open the exit panel, expecting to find the safety of the main kitchen on the ground floor.
Instead, we stepped directly into a horrific massacre.
The marble floors of the kitchen were covered in shattered glass, and three of Lorenzo's most loyal guards lay motionless on the ground.
Standing amidst the absolute destruction was a dozen heavily armed men wearing black tactical masks.

At the center of the group stood the ruthless mafia boss, Don Falcone, Lorenzo's most hated and powerful rival.
Falcone smiled cruelly as he raised his silver revolver and pointed it directly at my face.
