Chapter 4 - The Garage Escape

Absolute chaos erupted in the kitchen as the masked guard collapsed violently to the marble floor.

Lorenzo grabbed my arm with his uninjured hand and yanked me forcefully toward the kitchen's service exit.

A hail of bullets tore through the room, shattering the expensive granite countertops and pulverizing the wooden cabinets into splinters.

I kept my body curled tightly around Leo, running blindly through the smoke and debris as deafening gunfire roared behind us.

We burst through the heavy fire doors and tumbled down a concrete stairwell leading into the underground parking garage.

Lorenzo leaned heavily against the steel railing, coughing up a small amount of blood as his body began to fail.

"Take my keys, Elena," he gasped, tossing a heavy black key fob into my trembling hands.

He pointed toward a massive, matte-black armored SUV parked in the VIP section of the underground bunker.

"Get my son out of here, and do not ever look back," Lorenzo commanded, drawing his stolen pistol to hold off the approaching army.

I shook my head fiercely, completely refusing to abandon the man who had just risked everything to save my life.

"I already lost one child, Lorenzo, and I am not letting this baby lose his father!" I screamed over the echoing alarms.

I grabbed him by the belt and practically dragged his massive, wounded frame toward the armored vehicle.

I unlocked the heavy doors and shoved him into the passenger seat just as Falcone's men breached the stairwell.

I strapped Leo securely into the reinforced car seat in the back, ignoring the bullets sparking dangerously against the bulletproof glass.

I jumped into the driver's seat, hitting the push-to-start button as the powerful V8 engine roared to life with a deafening growl.

Marcus sprinted into the garage, raising a heavy tactical shotgun and aiming it directly at my windshield.

He fired a massive slug that cracked the armored glass, leaving a terrifying web of white fractures right in front of my face.

I slammed my foot on the accelerator, determined to run my abusive ex-boyfriend over and end my nightmare forever.

Marcus dove out of the way at the very last second, tumbling fiercely across the concrete floor.

I steered the massive SUV toward the heavily reinforced steel gates that blocked the garage exit.

Lorenzo reached over, pressing a specialized button on the dashboard that initiated the emergency gate release.

The heavy metal doors slowly began to rise, revealing the dark, rain-slicked highway leading away from the estate.

We were only seconds away from absolute freedom.

Suddenly, Marcus reached a massive electrical panel on the wall and completely severed the main power line with his shotgun.

The garage doors violently stopped moving, leaving a gap that was entirely too small for the armored SUV to fit through.
