Chapter 9 - The Dinner Party

Elena backed against the massive glass window, her hands trembling.

She swore she didn't take the necklace from Sofia's body.

She claimed Marcus gave it to her yesterday to hold for safekeeping.

Dominic lowered his gun slightly, confused by the overlapping lies.

He realized someone was playing them all against each other.

He decided we needed to force the real traitor out into the open.

Dominic told Elena she was going to host an impromptu dinner party tomorrow night at the Westchester mansion.

She was going to invite the head of the Rossi family.

I told him he was insane to invite his worst enemies into his home.

He said it was the only way to see who would betray him when the pressure was on.

The next evening, the mansion was restored to its usual intimidating glory.

I dressed in a fresh maid uniform and served champagne.

The tension in the dining room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Dominic sat at the head of the table.

Elena sat to his right, looking pale and nervous.

Don Rossi sat to his left, surrounded by his personal bodyguards.

Dominic raised his glass for a toast to new beginnings and old secrets.

Elena picked up her wine glass with shaky hands.

She took a long, desperate sip to calm her nerves.

Less than ten seconds later, she began to choke.

Her eyes went wide with terror as she clawed at her throat.

She collapsed onto the expensive mahogany table, gasping for air.

Don Rossi jumped up and drew his weapon.

Dominic stood frozen, staring at his dying fiancée.

Elena looked up at Dominic with her final breath.

She whispered that it wasn't her who cut the brakes.

Then her eyes rolled back, and she stopped moving completely.

Someone had poisoned her wine.
