Chapter 2 - The Enemy Inside

The recording clicked off, leaving a suffocating silence in the music room.

Dominic stared at the tiny black device in his hand as if it were a live grenade.

His knuckles turned stark white.

I backed away slowly, my mind racing through a list of everyone employed at the Vale estate.

There were only three people who had worked here for a full decade.

The head chef, the groundskeeper, and Marcus Cole.

Dominic’s jaw tightened so hard I thought his teeth might shatter.

He didn't yell or throw things.

He simply walked to the heavy walnut doors and locked them from the inside.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

I asked him what he was doing.

He told me that nobody could know we found this tape.

If the killer realized Sofia had left evidence, we would both be dead before midnight.

I told him I was just a maid and this was not in my job description.

He looked at me with cold, calculating eyes.

He said I was the only person in the house he knew for a fact was innocent.

I had only been here for six days.

He told me I was going to help him find out who murdered his sister.

Before I could object, my phone buzzed in my apron pocket.

I pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It was a text from an unknown number.

The message was short and chilling.

It said to put the recorder down and walk out of the room, or I would be the next one to have a tragic accident.
