Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass

I showed the text message to Dominic.

His dark eyes scanned the screen, and his entire demeanor shifted from grief to pure, lethal rage.

He told me to give him my phone.

He crushed the device under his boot without a second thought.

I gasped, thinking about how much a replacement would cost on a maid's salary.

He pulled a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills from his jacket and shoved them into my hands.

He said he would buy me a new phone, but right now we needed to leave the estate.

Whoever sent that text was watching us at this very moment.

Dominic unlocked the door and told me to walk normally toward the garage.

We stepped into the hallway, trying to look like a boss giving routine instructions to his staff.

Marcus was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

His eyes narrowed as he watched us descend.

He asked Dominic if everything was alright.

Dominic lied smoothly, saying he needed to check on a shipment and that I was coming to clean the downtown office.

Marcus offered to drive us.

Dominic declined, insisting he would drive himself.

We made it to the underground garage and climbed into a sleek, black armored SUV.

Dominic started the engine and sped out of the gates.

I finally let out a breath I had been holding for ten minutes.

I asked him where we were going.

He said he had a safe house in the city that nobody knew about.

We approached a sharp curve on the mountain road leading out of Westchester.

Dominic pressed his foot against the brake pedal.

Nothing happened.

He pumped the brakes frantically, but the pedal went straight to the floorboard.

He looked at me with wild eyes.

He told me to hold on because someone had cut the brake lines.
