Chapter 6 - Blood Ties

Deafening gunfire tore the cheap motel room to shreds.

Wood splintered and drywall dust filled the air like thick fog.

Dominic dragged me behind an overturned heavy oak dresser.

Marcus was bleeding on the floor, groaning in pain but still clutching his weapon.

Dominic fired three shots blindly through the broken window.

The shooting outside suddenly stopped.

We waited in agonizing silence for a full minute.

Dominic crawled over to Marcus and applied pressure to his bleeding shoulder.

He asked Marcus who sent the hit squad.

Marcus coughed up blood and said he didn't know, but they were driving black vans with red tinted windows.

Dominic's face drained of color.

He whispered that those vans belonged to the Rossi family.

The Rossis were Dominic's biggest rivals in the city.

I asked why the Rossis would care about Sofia's death.

Dominic looked at me with a complicated expression.

He said Sofia was secretly engaged to the youngest Rossi brother before she died.

My head spun with this new information.

Dominic searched Marcus's pockets and pulled out a set of car keys.

He told Marcus we were leaving and that he would send a trusted doctor to help him.

We snuck out the back window and found Marcus's unmarked sedan parked in the alley.

As we sped away from the motel, I reached into the glove compartment to look for a map.

My fingers brushed against a manila folder.

I pulled it out and opened it.

Inside was a complete dossier on me, Rachel Bennett.

There were photos of my apartment, my bank statements, and a picture of my estranged older brother.

Across the top of the file, someone had written a terrifying note in red ink.

The note said that Rachel Bennett was the perfect bait.
