Chapter 7 - The Burner Phone

I threw the folder onto the dashboard.
I demanded to know why Marcus had a detailed file on my entire life.
Dominic glanced at the papers and gripped the steering wheel tighter.
He swore he had never seen that folder before in his life.
I didn't believe him.
I told him to pull the car over and let me out right now.
He refused, saying I was a walking target whether I stayed in the car or not.
He explained that Marcus must have investigated me when I applied for the maid position.
I argued that finding my bank statements was a background check, but calling me 'perfect bait' was a setup.
Dominic hit the brakes and pulled into an abandoned parking lot.
He turned to me and promised that he never intended to use me as a pawn.
Suddenly, a loud buzzing sound came from the backseat.
I reached back and found a cheap plastic burner phone tucked into the seat cushions.
It wasn't my phone, and it wasn't Dominic's.
I answered the call and put it on speaker.
A distorted voice on the other end spoke immediately.
The voice asked Marcus if the maid was dead yet.
Dominic leaned in close to the microphone.
He told the caller that the maid was fine, but they were going to have a serious problem.
The line went dead instantly.
Dominic grabbed the phone and scrolled through the call history.
There was only one number dialed.
He typed the number into the car's navigation system to reverse-trace the location.
The GPS coordinates locked onto a luxury penthouse in Manhattan.
Dominic stared at the address in disbelief.
I asked him whose apartment that was.
He said it belonged to his fiancée, Elena.
May you like
I stared at him in shock because I didn't even know he was engaged.
Dominic whispered that Elena had been Sofia's best friend.
