Chapter 8 - The Fiancé

The drive to Manhattan felt like a funeral procession.

Dominic didn't speak a single word.

His knuckles were white on the steering wheel.

I sat in the passenger seat, trying to process the fact that the mafia boss I worked for was engaged to a woman who wanted me dead.

We parked two blocks away from the luxury high-rise.

Dominic opened the trunk and handed me a spare dark jacket to cover my torn maid uniform.

He told me we were going to walk through the front lobby like we owned the place.

We bypassed the doorman by slipping through the service elevator.

Dominic used a special keycard to access the penthouse level.

The doors slid open to reveal a massive, modern apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the skyline.

Elena was sitting on a white velvet sofa, drinking a glass of red wine.

She was stunningly beautiful, with blonde hair and sharp features.

She dropped her wine glass when she saw us walk in.

Dark red liquid spilled across the pristine white rug like blood.

Dominic asked her why she ordered a hit on his maid.

Elena looked panicked and denied everything.

She claimed her phone had been hacked by the Rossi family.

I stepped out from behind Dominic.

As I moved into the light, I noticed something sparkling around Elena's neck.

It was a delicate silver chain holding a custom-made diamond pendant in the shape of a musical note.

Dominic saw it at the exact same time.

He stopped breathing.

He asked Elena where she got that necklace.

Elena stammered, saying she bought it at an antique shop last week.

Dominic pulled his gun and aimed it at her chest.

He told her she was lying.

That necklace belonged to Sofia, and she was wearing it the night she died.
