Chapter 4 - The Safe House That Wasn't

The SUV smashed through the metal guardrail.
Metal groaned and glass shattered as we plunged into the dense woods.
The armored frame absorbed the worst of the impact, saving our lives as the vehicle slammed into a massive oak tree.
Airbags deployed with a deafening crack.
Smoke hissed from the crumpled hood.
Dominic kicked his door open and dragged me out of the passenger side before the engine could catch fire.
My head spun, and my uniform was torn, but I was miraculously alive.
We scrambled up the steep embankment just as the SUV erupted into a ball of flames.
Dominic grabbed my hand and pulled me into the shadows of the trees.
We walked for two miles through the woods until we reached a rundown motel on the edge of the highway.
He paid the clerk with cash and hurried me into a dingy room that smelled like stale smoke.
He locked the deadbolt and drew the heavy curtains.
I sat on the edge of the lumpy bed, shaking uncontrollably.
I told him I wanted to quit and go back to my tiny apartment in Yonkers.
He said going home was the fastest way to get myself killed.
There was a sudden knock at the motel room door.
We both froze in terror.
Dominic pulled a silver handgun from his waistband and motioned for me to stay quiet.
He crept toward the door and looked through the peephole.
He cursed under his breath and unlocked the deadbolt.
The door swung open to reveal Marcus Cole.
May you like
Marcus was holding a silenced pistol, and it was pointed directly at my chest.
He looked at Dominic and said he had warned him not to involve the maid.
