Chapter 9 - The Sacrifice

Time seemed to slow down to an agonizing crawl.

The green metal sphere rolled across the blood-stained concrete, stopping barely three feet from where Sophia and Alessandro lay.

There was no time to run, no time to find cover.

Alessandro violently shoved Sophia behind a steel pillar, throwing his wounded body over hers to shield her from the blast.

He closed his eyes, waiting for the inevitable end.

A sudden, fierce bark shattered the silence.

Bruno lunged forward, ignoring the fact that his body was completely broken.

The massive dog scooped the live grenade into his bleeding mouth.

With one final, desperate push, he threw himself over the edge of the broken floor and plummeted into the freezing river.

A muffled, underwater shockwave shook the entire foundation of the building.

A geyser of icy water erupted through the hole in the floor, raining down on the concrete.

Sophia screamed in horror, crawling toward the edge of the pit.

Alessandro pulled himself up, looking down into the dark, churning water below.

There was nothing but floating ice and debris.

The warehouse fell dead silent, save for the sound of the freezing wind howling through the broken windows.

Dr. Hale ran in with the second wave of security, but Alessandro just shook his head.

Bruno was gone.

Suddenly, a tiny, frantic voice echoed from the entrance of the warehouse.

Emma broke away from her guard and sprinted toward the edge of the water.
