Chapter 4 - The Fish Market

Alessandro froze, staring at the tiny girl on his couch.
“What did you say, little one?” he asked softly, kneeling beside her.
“The bad men,” Emma repeated, rubbing her tear-stained eyes.
“They smelled like yucky fish.”
Marco looked at Alessandro, his eyes widening in sudden realization.
“The old Fulton fish packing plant,” Marco said.
“The Russians bought it last month through a shell company.”
Alessandro’s jaw clenched tight.
He didn't need to sign over his port or negotiate with ghosts.
He just needed to go to war.
He opened his gun safe and began loading magazines with deadly precision.
“Keep a guard on her at all times,” Alessandro ordered, nodding toward Emma.
Suddenly, a weak bark echoed from the hallway.
Everyone turned to see Bruno standing in the doorway.
The dog was heavily bandaged, bleeding through his dressings, and leaning hard against the wall.
Dr. Hale ran up behind him, looking terrified.
“I couldn’t stop him, Mr. Moretti,” the vet stammered.
“He woke up smelling the blood on the floor and just started walking.”
Bruno limped slowly across the room, ignoring the pain in his old bones.
He stopped in front of a junior security guard standing near the door.
The massive dog bared his teeth, letting out a low, guttural growl that made the floorboards vibrate.

The young guard’s face went entirely pale.
He instinctively reached for the weapon holstered at his hip.
