Chapter 2 - The Ambush

The sound of shattering glass echoed across the snowy courtyard.
Sophia instinctively threw herself over Emma, shielding the toddler as their apartment door was kicked off its hinges.
Three masked men swept into the tiny living room with assault rifles raised.
They didn’t even look at the television or the small jewelry box on the dresser.
Their eyes locked immediately onto Sophia.
Before the first man could take another step, a terrifying roar shook the walls.
Bruno launched himself from the shadows like a black missile.
The massive Cane Corso slammed into the lead attacker, crushing the man’s tactical vest beneath his immense weight.
The intruder screamed as Bruno’s jaws locked onto his arm.
“Shoot the dog!” another man yelled, raising his weapon.
Sophia grabbed Emma and scrambled toward the bathroom, praying the heavy wooden door would hold.
Gunfire deafened her, drowning out Bruno’s furious snarls.
She shoved Emma into the empty bathtub and covered the child with her own trembling body.
The bathroom door splintered violently inward.
A rough hand grabbed Sophia by the hair and dragged her backward onto the floor.
She kicked and scratched, screaming for Emma to stay hidden.
Through the chaos, she saw Bruno limping heavily, blood dripping from his flank as he tried to protect them.
But there were too many men.
A heavy rifle butt struck the back of Sophia’s head, sending her vision spinning into darkness.

When Alessandro finally breached the apartment with his men, the room was empty.
Only Emma remained, crying softly beside a bleeding, unmoving Bruno.
