Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

Dominic stared at the flashing lights painting the church walls in chaotic, terrifying colors.

He knew there was absolutely no way out of this building for both of them.

He turned slowly to Clara, grabbing her face gently with both of his bloodstained hands.

He told her that the FBI was completely compromised, but the national press was not.

He ordered her to take the ledger and escape immediately through the forgotten catacombs beneath the altar.

Clara shook her head frantically, stubbornly refusing to leave him behind to die alone.

Dominic kissed her fiercely, pouring every ounce of his unspoken feelings into her lips.

He broke the passionate kiss and shoved the heavy ledger securely into her trembling hands.

He promised her that he would buy her enough time to expose the absolute truth to the entire world.

Dominic turned his back on the woman he loved and walked bravely out the front doors of the church with his hands raised.

Dozens of red laser sights immediately painted his chest as heavily armed SWAT officers swarmed him.

He was thrown roughly to the hard pavement, aggressively handcuffed, and dragged into an armored transport.

Hours passed slowly in a cold, windowless interrogation room at the central police precinct.

Dominic sat in total silence, praying to a god he ignored that Clara had made it safely into the wind.

The heavy metal door of the dark interrogation room finally clicked open.

Dominic fully expected to see a corrupt detective or a compromised federal agent walk inside.

Instead, Vincent walked arrogantly into the room wearing a perfectly tailored designer suit.

Pinned proudly to Vincent's expensive lapel was a shining, golden NYPD Detective's badge.

Vincent smiled down at his handcuffed brother and whispered that the game was finally over.
