Dominic reacted entirely on primal instinct.
He violently shoved Clara to the concrete floor and dropped his own weight to his knees.
Tommy’s bullet shattered the wall exactly where Dominic’s head had been a fraction of a second earlier.
Dominic fired upward, putting a bullet perfectly between his former enforcer's eyes.
Tommy collapsed in a lifeless heap, his heavy body blocking the doorway.
Dominic grabbed Clara’s hand and pulled her roughly up from the cold floor.
He knew they could not possibly go back through the main ballroom.
The entire building was likely swarming with Vincent’s heavily armed traitors.
They sprinted up the service stairs toward the rooftop parking garage.
Clara quickly kicked off her high heels so she could run faster.
Dominic pushed open the heavy roof door, the cold night air biting fiercely at their skin.
He scanned the rows of parked luxury vehicles and spotted his armored black SUV.
He hit the unlock button on his key fob, and the bright headlights flashed twice.
They bolted toward the car just as the stairwell door burst open behind them.
Gunfire erupted immediately, bullets sparking wildly against the concrete pillars around them.
Dominic pushed Clara into the passenger seat and jumped behind the steering wheel.
He slammed his foot on the gas pedal, the tires screaming as the massive vehicle lunged forward.
He smashed entirely through the wooden parking gate and sped down the spiraling exit ramp.
They burst out onto the busy streets of Manhattan, weaving recklessly through the midnight traffic.
Clara was breathing heavily, clutching the torn fabric of her dress.
Dominic finally let out a breath, foolishly believing they had secured a momentary head start.
He reached for his secure encrypted phone to call his remaining loyal captains.
The dashboard screen suddenly flickered and turned a bright, glowing blood red.
A cold, mechanical voice filled the silent cabin of the car.
