Chapter 3 - The Confession

The heavy armored SUV rolled to a complete, terrifying stop.

Dominic furiously punched the electronic unlock buttons on the driver's door panel.

Nothing happened at all.

Vincent had somehow hacked the vehicle’s mainframe to trap them inside a bulletproof cage.

Bright headlights appeared at the far end of the bridge, speeding directly toward their disabled vehicle.

Dominic knew his ballistic glass would not withstand concentrated automatic fire forever.

He reached under his seat and pulled out a heavy steel tactical crowbar.

He swung it violently against the passenger side window.

The reinforced glass cracked loudly, but it stubbornly refused to shatter.

Clara frantically grabbed a heavy metal flashlight from the open glove compartment.

She smashed it directly into the exact center of the spiderweb crack Dominic had just created.

The window finally blew outward in a massive shower of thick safety glass.

Dominic grabbed Clara by the waist and dragged her safely through the broken window frame.

They sprinted toward the edge of the bridge just as three black vans slammed on their brakes behind them.

Dozens of armed men poured aggressively out of the unmarked vehicles.

Dominic pulled Clara over the metal railing, and they plummeted toward the freezing river below.

They hit the dark water hard, the icy impact knocking all the breath from Dominic’s lungs.

He grabbed Clara’s waist under the water and swam desperately toward the muddy riverbank.

They dragged themselves onto the rocky shore, shivering violently and completely soaked to the bone.

They crawled quietly into an abandoned concrete drainage pipe to hide from the searchlights sweeping the water above.

Dominic aggressively pinned Clara against the cold, damp wall of the pipe.

He demanded to know exactly why his younger brother wanted her dead.

Clara swallowed hard, her teeth chattering from the freezing cold.

She confessed that she had found Arthur's secret ledger hidden in the mansion's library.

The massive ledger proved Vincent was stealing millions from the Five Families to fund his own private mercenary army.

Dominic angrily asked her why Arthur trusted a simple civilian with this deadly information.

Clara looked him dead in the eyes with absolute, unwavering defiance.

She told him that Arthur was actually her father, and they were both undercover agents working for the FBI.
