Chapter 8 - The Setup

Clara staggered backward as if she had been physically punched in the stomach.

Her entire world was rapidly collapsing around her as she realized her own agency had betrayed her.

Agent Vance was the only living person who knew Arthur's secret vault number.

Dominic grabbed the heavy ledger, wrapped his arm protectively around Clara, and dragged her out of the penthouse.

He promised her fiercely that he would personally put a bullet in Vance's skull.

Right now, they needed to bring the ledger directly to Don Falcone to immediately cancel the bounty.

Dominic called a trusted old contact to set up a strictly neutral meeting spot at an abandoned church in Brooklyn.

They drove in tense, heavy silence, the immense weight of their respective betrayals pressing down upon them.

Clara rested her exhausted head against Dominic's shoulder, finally letting a single tear fall down her cheek.

Dominic kissed the top of her head gently, swearing that nobody else would die today.

They arrived at the Gothic church, the beautiful stained glass windows looking dark and entirely hollow.

Dominic pushed the heavy wooden doors open, keeping his gun raised and his eyes scanning the shadows.

The long wooden pews were completely empty, and the absolute silence was deeply unnerving.

They walked slowly down the center aisle toward the grand marble altar.

Lying in a massive pool of fresh blood at the foot of the altar was Don Falcone.

The supreme boss of the Commission had been shot three times directly in the chest.

Flashing red and blue police lights suddenly illuminated the beautiful stained glass windows from the outside.

The loud screech of dozens of police sirens surrounded the old church on all sides.

Vincent had orchestrated the perfect, inescapable setup.

A loud police megaphone ordered Dominic and Clara to drop their weapons and come out with their hands raised.
