Chapter 2 - The Betrayal

Simon tackled Abigail violently to the floor just as a second bullet destroyed a crystal vase.

Sharp glass rained down heavily on them in the suddenly dark bedroom.

"Stay completely still," Simon hissed, covering her small body protectively with his own.

Abigail was trembling uncontrollably, but she bravely did not scream.

She had spent her entire life protecting her siblings, and mindless panic was not in her nature.

Simon pulled a sleek silver handgun from a hidden magnetic holster under the bed.

He dragged her roughly toward the heavy steel door of his en-suite safe room.

"Your father deliberately set me up," Simon growled as he locked the massive vault door behind them.

"He merely owed you money, he didn't set you up," Abigail argued, fiercely clutching her torn dress.

"He stole from the ruthless Russian mob and used our public wedding as a distraction," Simon explained coldly.

Abigail felt the warm blood drain entirely from her face.

If her gambling father had actually crossed the Russians, her younger siblings were in mortal danger.

"I have to go get Tommy and Rose right now," she pleaded desperately.

Simon began to bandage his bleeding shoulder with a tactical medical kit from the wall.

"My men are already speeding to your house, but we have a much bigger problem," he said grimly.

He pointed a bloody finger to the flashing red light on his advanced security monitor.

Someone had successfully disabled the perimeter alarms from deep inside the mansion.

Only his most trusted inner circle had the access codes to that secure system.

"We are trapped in this vault, and one of my own trusted men is trying to kill me," Simon muttered.

The heavy vault door suddenly groaned loudly as someone on the outside attached a thermal explosive charge.

The thick metal began to glow a terrifying, blinding white.
