Chapter 4 - The Underground Escape
The deafening roar of the gunshot bounced off the concrete walls, making Elena's ears ring violently.
Julian fired twice more upward into the dark stairwell, aiming blindly to force their pursuer back.
A man screamed in pain from the floor above, followed by the heavy thud of a body tumbling down the stairs.
"Move, now!" Julian ordered, grabbing Elena's hand and dragging her down the final flight of steps.
They burst through the heavy basement doors and out into the freezing, dimly lit hospital parking garage.
Rows of doctors' cars and empty ambulances sat quietly under the flickering fluorescent lights.
"Which car belongs to you?" Julian demanded, his breathing becoming dangerously shallow and ragged.
Elena pointed with a trembling finger toward a beat-up, ten-year-old silver sedan parked near a concrete pillar.
She fumbled desperately for her keys, unlocking the doors just as the basement alarm systems began to blare.
Julian collapsed heavily into the passenger seat, leaving a dark smear of fresh blood on the cheap upholstery.
Elena jumped behind the steering wheel, her hands shaking so badly she could barely insert the key into the ignition.
The old engine sputtered for a terrifying second before finally roaring to life.
