Chapter 1 - The Awakening

Elena froze completely as the large, calloused fingers tightened like a steel vice around her fragile wrist.
It was not a random muscle spasm or a meaningless neurological reflex.
The grip was firm, calculating, and undeniably purposeful.
She stared down at the man who had been a lifeless shell for six agonizing months.
His dark, piercing eyes were now wide open, locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity.
"You talk entirely too much about the rain, Elena," his voice was a rough, gravelly rasp that sent shivers down her spine.
Her heart slammed violently against her ribs as the impossible reality crashed over her.
He had been awake, trapped inside his own body, listening to every single secret she had confessed in the dark.
Before she could hit the emergency call button, his grip tightened enough to make her gasp in pain.
"Do not make a single sound, or we will both be dead before morning," he warned in a dangerous whisper.
He pulled her slightly closer, his intense gaze shifting toward the small window of the hospital door.
"The men standing guard outside this room do not work for me."
"They are my treacherous brother's assassins, and they are just waiting for the final order to kill me."

Elena felt all the blood drain completely out of her face.
Suddenly, the heavy metal handle of the hospital door began to slowly press downward.
