Chapter 5 - The Fall from Grace

David deliberately did not resist as the cold metal locked securely around his strong wrists.
Maya screamed loudly and desperately tried to push past the heavily armed officers.
"He did absolutely nothing wrong!" she cried out with raw desperation.
David looked back at her with a look of absolute, terrifying calm.
"Maya, go safely with Marcus and keep your mother alive," David instructed her firmly.
Victoria laughed entirely out loud at his pathetic attempt to maintain control of the situation.
"Her sick mother is not going anywhere tonight," Victoria taunted with a wicked gleam in her eye.
"As the new hospital owner, I am legally placing her mother under state medical guardianship."
Maya literally felt the entire world spinning out of control around her.
The police forcefully dragged David backward toward the open elevator doors.
Marcus quickly grabbed Maya's shaking arm and violently pulled her into a nearby emergency stairwell.
"We have to hide right now," Marcus whispered urgently into the darkness.
"We cannot just leave him behind with them!" Maya protested through her flowing tears.
"Mr. Prescott aggressively pays me to protect you, and that is what I am going to do," Marcus replied coldly.
They rapidly ran down ten steep flights of stairs into the dark, damp parking garage.
Marcus forcefully shoved her into the back of an unmarked, heavily armored black SUV.
He drove completely recklessly through the dark, empty city streets to actively avoid police detection.
Maya stared numbly out the tinted window as her entire life rapidly crumbled to tiny pieces.
"How did Victoria know we were coming to the hospital?" Maya asked quietly into the silence.
Marcus kept his dark eyes fixed strictly on the wet road ahead.
"She has very expensive spies everywhere," Marcus answered incredibly vaguely.
Maya suddenly noticed a strange, flashing red light on the dashboard navigation system.
She leaned cautiously forward and instantly recognized the specific tracking software on the screen.
"You were actively broadcasting our exact location to her," Maya realized with sheer, paralyzing horror.
Marcus aggressively slammed on the brakes in the dead center of a deserted suspension bridge.
He slowly turned around and pointed a black, suppressed pistol directly at Maya's chest.

"I am incredibly sorry, Miss Carter," Marcus said with absolutely zero emotion in his voice.
"But Victoria simply pays much better than David ever did."
