Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Terms

David set his glass down on the heavy marble table.

He had never met a woman who demanded boundaries before the check was even written.

Maya stood her ground under his intensely cold gaze.

"I do not need a nightly companion," David finally said.

Maya crossed her arms defensively against her chest.

"Then why am I standing in your ridiculously large living room?" she asked.

David walked slowly toward his massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

"I need a wife," he stated flatly.

Maya let out a sharp, immediate laugh of disbelief.

"You want to buy a wife for eighty thousand dollars?" she mocked.

"I want to buy a fake wife for two million dollars," David corrected her without blinking.

Maya felt the air suddenly leave her lungs.

Two million dollars would pay for her mother's surgery and change her entire life forever.

"What exactly is the catch?" Maya asked cautiously.

David turned around with a remarkably dark look in his blue eyes.

"You have to live with me for one year and pretend to be desperately in love with me."

Maya thought about her dying mother in the crowded hospital ward.

"I can act," Maya said firmly.

"Good," David replied.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of his private office swung violently open.

Marcus stood there with a look of absolute panic on his usually calm face.

"Sir, she completely bypassed the downstairs security," Marcus stammered nervously.

A stunning woman in a tight red designer dress stepped out from behind the assistant.

"Hello, David," Victoria purred with a wildly wicked smile.

"I heard you were getting married, and I came to stop it."
