Chapter 7 - The Trap

Peter smiled wickedly, completely blocking the only exit out of the luxurious office.

"You really made us work hard to find you tonight, Claire," Peter laughed, aiming the heavy weapon directly at Mark.

Mark slowly raised his hands, subtly shifting his body to completely shield Claire and Sophie from the gun.

Judge Harrison nervously stood up and quickly hurried out of a secret side door, utterly ashamed of his massive betrayal.

"Hand over the little brat right now, and I might let you and your boyfriend live," Peter demanded coldly.

Claire grabbed Sophie tightly, her maternal instincts completely overriding any sense of fear.

"I will gladly die before I ever let you touch my daughter again," Claire roared with absolute defiance.

Mark suddenly kicked a heavy leather chair directly across the polished floor, sending it crashing into Peter’s legs.

The gun fired wildly, the bullet completely shattering the massive glass window overlooking the dark city.

Claire did not hesitate for a single second; she scooped Sophie into her arms and sprinted toward the open office door.

Mark violently tackled Peter to the ground, aggressively punching the massive man in the face to buy Claire time.

Claire ran desperately down the long, empty corridor, completely ignoring the sharp pain in her bare feet.

She found the emergency stairwell and bolted down the concrete steps as fast as humanly possible.

Mark caught up to them three floors down, his face heavily bruised but completely victorious.

They burst out of the emergency exit and disappeared into the chaotic, crowded city streets.

Claire collapsed against a brick wall, heavily gasping for air while clutching her terrified daughter.

"We have absolutely no evidence left, the judge destroyed everything we had," Claire cried in pure despair.

Sophie softly tugged on Claire’s ruined slip, her tiny hands shaking aggressively in the cold night air.

"Mommy, I took the bad man's phone when they were fighting," Sophie whispered innocently.

The little girl pulled Peter’s expensive smartphone out of her small dress pocket, and the screen was completely unlocked.
