Chapter 4 - The Getaway Car
Claire felt her blood run entirely cold as the horrifying reality set in.
She quickly threw her heavy, soaking wet wedding dress inside the car and pulled Sophie onto her lap.
Mark jumped into the driver’s seat and slammed his foot aggressively onto the gas pedal.
The dark sedan sped away into the rainy night, leaving the luxurious wedding venue far behind them.
Claire wrapped her shivering daughter in a warm wool blanket she found sitting on the backseat.
"How long have you known about this twisted conspiracy?" Claire asked, her voice shaking with adrenaline.
Mark kept his eyes entirely focused on the slippery, rain-slicked highway ahead of them.
"I have been tracking Evan's offshore bank accounts for three months," Mark explained grimly.
He revealed that the inheritance was actually worth hundreds of millions, far more than Claire had ever been told.
Evan had specifically targeted Claire because he needed a vulnerable widow to manipulate.
Claire felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over her as she realized her entire romance was a calculated lie.
"We need to get straight to the police station right now," Claire demanded, wiping the rain from her face.
Mark violently shook his head, his hands gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.
"The local police chief is on Evan's payroll, we cannot trust anyone with a badge tonight," Mark warned.
Suddenly, the digital dashboard of the sedan flickered wildly and turned a bright, blinding red.
The heavy car violently jerked forward, accelerating rapidly without Mark even touching the gas pedal.
"What is happening to the car?" Claire screamed, holding Sophie tightly as the vehicle swerved aggressively.
Mark desperately slammed his foot on the brakes, but the pedal was completely stuck to the floorboard.

"Evan's security team just hacked the smart vehicle network, they have total remote control of the car," Mark shouted.
The steering wheel locked completely into place, violently forcing the speeding car directly toward a concrete highway barrier.
