Chapter 1 - The Missing Shoe

The crystal chandeliers cast a flawless golden glow across the crowded luxury ballroom.

Claire wore a breathtaking white gown that cost more than she used to make in an entire year.

She was supposed to be the happiest bride in the entire world today.

But a sudden flash of movement caught her eye near the towering wedding cake.

She turned her head and saw Peter, her new brother-in-law, aggressively pulling someone into the shadows.

It was Sophie, her five-year-old daughter.

Sophie was wearing a delicate white dress that matched her mother.

But her beautiful flower crown was completely crooked and sliding down her forehead.

One of her tiny white shoes was missing, lost somewhere on the polished marble floor.

Her small, fragile wrist was trapped tightly in Peter’s massive hand.

Sophie was reaching out toward the crowd with desperate tears streaming down her face.

"Mommy, help," the little girl whispered, her voice barely carrying over the loud music.

That was the exact moment Claire permanently stopped being a bride.

The expensive white dress suddenly felt like nothing more than a useless costume.

She instantly became a mother, entirely consumed by a fierce, protective rage.

Claire marched across the ballroom, shoving wealthy guests and expensive chairs out of her way.

She reached the cake table, grabbed Peter’s thick wrist, and forcefully tore his hand off her daughter.

Claire immediately pulled Sophie behind her back, standing like a shield in front of her child.

Evan, the handsome and wealthy groom, rushed over with a completely fake smile plastered on his face.

He grabbed Claire by the arm and squeezed it hard enough to bruise.

"You are embarrassing me in front of my family," Evan hissed through his perfect teeth.

Claire looked down and saw the angry red mark forming on Sophie’s tiny wrist.

Without a single second of hesitation, Claire swung her arm and slapped Evan directly across the face.

The sharp sound echoed loudly, instantly silencing the entire ballroom and stopping the live orchestra.

Evan stumbled backward, holding his red cheek in absolute shock.

But Claire was not looking at her cruel groom anymore.

Her eyes were locked on a thick, partially torn envelope sticking out of Peter’s inside jacket pocket.

During the physical struggle, Peter’s jacket had ripped open, exposing the documents inside.

Claire lunged forward and snatched the envelope before Peter could even react.

She pulled out the papers and saw the unmistakable logo of her late husband’s financial trust.

It was a highly detailed legal plan to legally drain Sophie’s massive inheritance by tomorrow morning.

But the most terrifying part was the signature approving the immediate transfer of all funds.

It was not signed by Evan or Peter, but by Claire’s own trusted defense attorney.
