Blood bubbled around the edge of the crude incision.
Clara grabbed a hollow plastic pen from her pocket, snapped the ends off, and shoved it into the hole.
Air rushed into Adrian's lungs with a harsh, whistling sound.
His eyes fluttered open, panic instantly taking over his features.
"Do not move, you are breathing," Clara ordered, holding him down.
Adrian gasped through the plastic tube, his skin slowly regaining color.
Titan hopped into the front seat and licked the sweat from Adrian's forehead.
Clara fell back against the driver's side door, utterly exhausted.
She looked out the cracked windshield into the dark, cavernous warehouse.
A shadow detached itself from the concrete pillars outside.
Someone had been waiting for them here all along.
The figure stepped into the dim moonlight, revealing a face Adrian thought he would never see again.
It was Elena, his supposedly dead wife, holding a silenced pistol.
She wore a cold, calculating smile that sent chills down Clara's spine.
"Leo was always too sloppy to get the job done right," Elena said.

She raised the weapon and pointed it squarely at Clara's chest.
"Thank you for saving my husband, nurse, but his time is officially up."
