Chapter 18 - The Sins of the Father

The heavy doors crashed violently onto the expensive Persian rug, shattering the celebratory atmosphere instantly.
Leo Castellano and Vincenzo Morretti were standing at the head of a massive mahogany table, holding crystal flutes of champagne.
Ten elite cartel bodyguards instantly drew their weapons, but Adrian and Clara opened fire first.
The deafening roar of automatic gunfire filled the opulent room, tearing the bodyguards to bloody shreds in a matter of seconds.
Leo dove cowardly behind the heavy mahogany table, screaming in pure terror as bullets shattered the windows around him.
Vincenzo Morretti stood completely frozen at the head of the table, his champagne glass slipping from his trembling fingers.
He was not staring at the bleeding, vengeful mafia boss who had just stormed his sanctuary.
He was staring directly into the cold, dead eyes of his own daughter.
"Clara," Vincenzo whispered, his face turning the color of dirty ash.
"You are supposed to be dead."
Clara stepped slowly over the bleeding bodies on the floor, keeping her weapon pointed directly at his chest.
"You sent me into a slaughterhouse, Father," Clara said, her voice echoing with a chilling emptiness.
"You sacrificed Mom, my brothers, and everyone who ever trusted you just so you could sit in that chair."
Vincenzo slowly raised his hands in a pathetic gesture of surrender, his eyes darting frantically toward a pistol resting on the table.
"I did it to ensure our family's legacy, Clara," Vincenzo lied desperately.
"I did it so you and I could rule this entire city together without any opposition."
He lunged suddenly toward the pistol on the table, proving his cowardly nature one final time.
Clara did not blink, flinch, or hesitate for a fraction of a second.
She squeezed the trigger, sending a single, hollow-point round directly into the center of her father's heart.
Vincenzo gasped violently, stumbling backward against the floor-to-ceiling windows before collapsing onto the expensive rug.

Clara stared down at his lifeless body, feeling absolutely nothing but a hollow, satisfying sense of closure.
She had finally avenged her family by killing the exact monster who had destroyed it.
