Chapter 5 - The Confession

Adrian stared at her, the revelation hanging heavy in the sterile air.
Clara Morretti was supposed to be a ghost, a remnant of a rival syndicate wiped out six years ago.
"Is it true?" Adrian asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Clara did not look away from his piercing gaze.
"Yes," she answered simply.
She walked back to the medical tray and began preparing a fresh bandage.
"I infiltrated this house two months ago to watch you die," she confessed.
Adrian coughed, clutching his bleeding chest.
"Then why did you stop the doctor from killing me?"
Clara finished taping the gauze over his wound.
"Because I took an oath to save lives, and because I realized your brother is much worse than you ever were."
Adrian let out a dark, painful chuckle.
He forced himself to sit up, ignoring the agony tearing through his ribs.
"If we stay in this room, we are both dead."
He pointed to a large metal supply cabinet bolted to the back wall.
"There is a maintenance hatch behind those shelves that leads to the old subway tunnels."
Clara and Titan helped pull the heavy cabinet away from the wall.
A rusty iron handle was exposed in the concrete.
Clara pulled the hatch open, revealing a pitch-black drop into the earth.

Sparks flew from the hinges as explosive charges were detonated on the other side.
