Chapter 8 - The Blade

Warm blood poured down the side of Clara's face, blinding her left eye.
She gritted her teeth and swerved into oncoming traffic to break the sniper's line of sight.
The black SUVs struggled to follow her reckless maneuvers.
Clara wiped the blood from her eye with her sleeve while keeping the wheel steady.
"We lost them for now," she said, her voice shaking with adrenaline.
She looked over at Adrian.
He was slumped against the window, his lips turning a terrifying shade of blue.
The small amount of paralytic in his system was finally reaching his respiratory muscles.
"Adrian, stay with me," she yelled, slapping his cheek.
He could not answer, his throat closing entirely.
Clara slammed on the brakes, skidding into the parking lot of an abandoned warehouse.
She killed the engine and threw the dome light on.
Adrian's chest stopped moving completely.
She knew she had less than two minutes before his brain suffered irreversible damage.
She did not have a surgical kit, a sterile environment, or anesthesia.
She reached into Adrian's jacket and pulled out his tactical pocket knife.
She flicked the blade open, praying her hands would not slip.
Titan whimpered in the back seat, sensing his master's life slipping away.

Clara felt for the correct spot on Adrian's throat, right below the Adam's apple.
Taking a deep breath, she plunged the blade directly into his windpipe.
